There are several theories popping up as to what may be the cause of the recent bloodshed in the Montreal underworld. The Rizzuto crime family leadership has been under attack and taken heavy losses. Over the past few months the Rizzuto family has lost family leader Agostino Cuntrera and his driver and family soldier Liborio Sciascia who were gunned down , family consigliere Paola Renda who has gone missing, and Nick Rizzuto Jr son of the Rizzuto family boss Vito Rizzuto who was also gunned down last December.

Some mafia experts believe that Montreal could be in the middle of a Mafia war between the Sicilian based Rizzuto family and the Calabrian mafia clan. But it is unclear as to why so far only Sicilians within the Rizzuto family have been targeted and killed, has the Rizzuto family become so weak and in disarray as to not be able to hit back ? Other mafia experts don’t think so and point out that so far there are no signs of the Calabrians or other mafia clans being involved.

A new theory is now being considered that the bloodshed could possibly be the product of an internal war within the Rizzuto family itself. Some local mafia experts believe that a younger generation of mobsters is at war with the old guard of the family and we are seeing a difference in opinion and a generation gap. Mafia families have seen this type of internal feud before and often ends with this type of violence. It is possible that the Montreal mafia decided to do some interior cleaning of its own house. Some believe that it’s possible that there has also been influence from some of the American mafia factions.

It is still unclear as to what is exactly happening in the Montreal underworld and if we have seen the last of the bloodshed. Things could take a drastic turn with the upcoming release of Rizzuto family boss Vito Rizzuto who filed for early release from federal prison. Vito’s release some think could be a sign of more violence to come but it could also serve to reestablish the family. One thing is for sure the citizens of Montreal are bracing themselves for the possibility of more Mafia violence.
